Our next Portico Concert is scheduled for Sunday August 20 at 5 PM and features the Northern New Mexico band, Lone Pinon, playing Chicano stringband style music with fiddle, accordion, guitarron, vocals and guitar. The concert is free, but please support Carrizozo Music by purchasing a roast pork dinner (available from 4:00), browse our silent auction and enjoy an evening of lively music and dancing on the lawn of the Carrizozo Woman’s Club. To reach the Woman’s Club from Rt 54, turn West at 12th Street, between the 54 Emporium and Roy's Ice Cream Parlor. Turn right onto D Ave and go one block to the historic WPA building on 11th Street and D Avenue. Carrizozo Music offers a special Mother’s Day Concert on May 14 at 4 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church. Entitled Broadway Hits, the performance will feature contemporary and musical theatre solos and duets as well as Cabaret and popular music delights. The El Paso ensemble, Broadway Trio, consists of Heather Dials and Sophia Sesha Grieb, sopranos, and Esequiel Meza, piano.
The group will perform a school outreach concert on Monday, May 15 at 10 AM at the Tularosa Elementary School Library. Both concerts are free and open to the general public. The concerts are made possible by the generous sponsorship of Tularosa Basin Telephone Company. Heather Dials (Soprano) began her professional career at the age of twelve as Flora in The Santa Fe Opera production of "The Turn of the Screw." Dials made her New York, Alice Tully Hall debut at the age of twenty-one while still a student at the Curtis Institute of Music. She has shared the stage with many of today’s biggest names in opera including, Luciano Pavarotti, Juan Diego Florez, Anna Netrebko, Eric Owens and Stephanie Blythe. Dials has won numerous awards and competitions including the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, first place in the Rosa Ponselle International Competition, first place in the Mario Lanza Competition. She was a recipient of the Sullivan Foundation Career Grant and Nominated for the prestigious Richard Tucker Career Grant. She has been heard in several live broadcasts for the Opera Company of Philadelphia and featured in the press by Opera America. As well as being an active performer, Ms. Dials has a vibrant vocal studio in Las Cruces, New Mexico and is on the voice faculty of the El Paso Conservatory of Music. She attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. A graduate of New Mexico State University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance, Sophia Sesha has been pursuing music since she was 7 years old. As an instrumentalist, she has played piano, violin, and viola. As an educator, she has served as a vocal coach for two local mariachi groups, has been a private teacher with her own voice and piano studio, and has served as soprano section leader in multiple choirs. Sophia has actively sung with many local organizations, both as soloist and chorister, including the Texas Music Educators Association All-State Choir, Bruce Nehring Consort, NMSU Choirs, NMSU Gospel Choir, Bella Voce de Las Cruces, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Choirs, and El Paso Chorale and Chamber Choir. She is also a founding member and regular coordinator/performer for Operation Spread the Music, a volunteer organization which brings live music to local nursing homes. A recitalist and veteran performer with the Dona Ana Lyric Opera, Sophia is currently pursuing a career as an opera singer and has recently returned from studies in Savannah, Georgia with the great baritone, Sherrill Milnes, as well as studies in Berlin, Germany with world-renowned soprano, Cheryl Studer Accomplished concert pianist and vocal coach and accompanist, Dr. Esequiel Meza has coached productions of The Magic Flute, Il Trittico, The Consul, The Telephone, Il Trovatore and La Bohème for El Paso Opera, and served as Music Director for Stagedoor Manor Institute of the Performing Arts in New York. Other music directing credits include NMSU and Doña Ana Lyric Opera Company, Music Theater of El Paso, Cimarron Circuit Opera Company, and Southern Arizona Light Opera Company. Dr. Meza has appeared as a solo pianist around the globe. He performs frequently as a member of the Clarion Duo and serves as keyboardist and pianist for the El Paso Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Meza has taught on the faculty of the University of Oklahoma where he was also Assistant Dean of Fine Arts and at the University of Bordeaux III in Talence, France. Dr. Meza holds a BM in piano performance from Sam Houston State University, an MM in piano performance and collaborative piano from the University of Arizona, a DMA in piano performance and fine arts administration from the University of Arizona and a Post Doctorate in Piano Performance from Indiana University. He is currently an instructor of piano and collaborative artist at the El Paso Conservatory of Music. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy a project by Carrizozo School kids K-4 that involved a field trip to the Socorro Gem Museum, classroom study of geology, participation with outside experts, and work with teacher Dena O'dell and artist Judy Pekelsma to design and paint sets, compose songs and make costumes.
