Friday, June 6 at 7PM... Lori Lovato and Friends, A Touch of Jazz!

On Friday, June 6, Lori Lovato and Friends, A Touch of Jazz, will present a concert at the Trinity United Methodist Church on 10th at D Avenue in Carrizozo. Performing the works of George Gershwin, Paquito D'Rivera, Sonny Rollins, and Charlie Parker will be Lori Lovato, clarinet, Lisa Kerr, piano and Jeff Cornelius, percussion. This Carrizozo Summer Pops Concert will be followed by a reception and opportunity to meet the performers. The concert is free and open to the public.

A pre-concert spaghetti dinner will be served at the Carrizozo Woman's club from 5-6:30. Dinner includes salad, bread, dessert and beverage for $8. The clubhouse is located on D Avenue and 11th Street.

To reach the church, turn west onto Airport Road from Route 54 at the Carrizozo Chamber Caboose. On Airport (8th Ave) go to the stop sign and turn left onto E Avenue, then take the first right to D Avenue and 10th. The church is on the southwest corner of D Ave and 10th. Park on D and walk to both venues.

Lori Lovato is clarinetist for the Santa Fe Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, Sphinx Symphony in Detroit, Santa Fe Concert Association Orchestra, San Juan Symphony, Opera SW Orchestra, Artist-Clinician for Backun Musical Services in Canada, and founding member of the New Mexico Woodwind Quintet. She has also appeared with the Albuquerque Chamber Soloists, Music at Angel Fire, Chamber Music Albuquerque, Chatter New Music, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, Santa Fe New Music, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Monterrey, Mexico, and toured with the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players. Ms. Lovato is a graduate of Northwestern University and the University of New Mexico. Prior to her performing career, Ms. Lovato was band and orchestra director at two Albuquerque high schools. Currently she maintains a private clarinet studio and performs musical outreach programs throughout the community. This summer Lori will be performing at the California Napa Valley Festival del Sole along with other members of the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Pinchas Zukerman.

Lisa Kerr enjoys playing a variety of music, including jazz, classical, salsa, and rock. She has performed with the NMSO and Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra, and has also been a keyboardist for many Broadway musicals, including Wicked, Spamalot, Mamma Mia! and Hairspray. Although she currently works as a high school librarian, she maintained a large studio of piano, jazz, and composition students for years, and taught music at all levels of public and private schools and at UNM.

Jeff Cornelius plays principal percussion with the New Mexico Philharmonic and teaches a private studio of 50 students. From 1986 to 2011 he played principal percussion with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Cornelius earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and completed his Master of Music degree at the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Prior to joining the New Mexico Symphony, Mr. Cornelius played with numerous orchestras including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, The Canton Symphony, the Colorado Philharmonic, the Toledo Symphony and an assortment of other summer festivals and ensembles. Since joining the NMSO, Mr. Cornelius has also performed with The Santa Fe Opera Orchestra and the Santa Fe Symphony as well as several chamber venues including Taos Chamber Music Festival, Music at Angel Fire, Chatter, and Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival where he appears on Stereophile’s recording of Darius Milhaud's La création du monde. He is the winner of the NMSO first annual concerto competition in 2007.

Carrizozo Music is able to offer these free concerts thanks to the generosity of Otero Electric Round up Grant, Zia Natural Gas Company, Tularosa Basin Telephone Company, Ty and Dena Turner, Rainbow Inn, Sacred Grounds Coffee and Tea House, Carrizozo Woman's Club, Trinity United Methodist Church, Carrizozo Lodgers Tax and Lincoln County Lodgers Tax. Their commitment to enhancing the quality of entertainment and education in Carrizozo and the surrounding area is critical to our continuting Classical Series, Summer Pops and School Outreach.

The next concert in the Carrizozo Music Summer Pops Series is on Friday, July 25 and will feature Altura Winds playing Scott Joplin rags, Sousa marches and light classics. On Thursday, August 25, Shepherd Moon, a group consisting of vocals, flute, sax and cello will play original, jazzy music with a hint of Celt, at both a school outreach concert and an evening community concert.
